HISTORY - In the late 1980’s, suitable, reliable meeting facilities for twelve step groups in central and northern Medina
County were difficult to find. Several long time A.A. members decided that a permanent place was needed to hold
twelve step group meetings. The current facility was secured in 1989. After many donations, thousands of hours of
volunteer labor, the support of the City of Brunswick and The Medina County Drug Abuse Commission, The Twelve
Step Recovery Club was opened in March of 1990. MCDAC continued to support the Club for several years but, now,
it is self-sufficient, receiving no grants or tax supported contributions of any kind. The Club is continuing its work,
providing a reliable place for 12 step groups to meet and a safe refuge for recovering persons through group rent, fund
raising events and donations. The organization is administered by four Officers and a board of trustees, all
volunteering their time to see to the daily Club business. The Club is a 501(c)(3) tax exempt organization for charitable
and educational purposes. No part of the net earnings inure to the benefit of private share holders or individuals.
Although there have been many, many people that have had a big impact on the success of
the Club since it’s inception, there is no one who gave more of himself to the ongoing success
of the Club as the founding President, Richard “Dick” Griffin who served more than 18 years
as the President until his death in 1998. Of all of the many good
people that worked so hard to bring the club into existence, Dick is
the one that stayed at the helm and kept it going. He and his
beloved wife Freda have left a lasting impression on the Club and
will forever be missed by all that knew him. In March 2000, on the
occasion of our twentieth anniversary the meeting room was
dedicated to the everlasting memory of Richard “Dick” Griffin, our
friend.
The Club is continuing on it’s mission to support recovery from alcoholism and drug
addiction. We maintain a 7 day per week schedule, open every afternoon for fellowship
and coffee, open every evening for meetings, supporting the 12 steps to recovery.
